Protecting Your Heart

Be careful not to protect it so much that it becomes a fortified prison…

From C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves

To love at all is to be vulnerable.

Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken.

If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even and animal.

Wrap it careful round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness.

But in that casket-safe, dark, motionless, airless-it will change.

It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable….
The only place outside Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers….of love is Hell.

I have this book. I keep saying I'm going to read it. Then, that day comes and it's, "maybe tomorrow." His writing is good. I cannot read it like I read all my other books, but I read it slow like savoring a cup of coffee. I was in the middle of his biography (reccomended!), but got distracted…again.

  7. Yes, powerful words! I'm reading a book at the moment (Strong Women, Soft Hearts by Paula Rinehart) that says most people view vulnerability as a weakness…..when actually it is the secret side of strength. The greater the risk…..the greater the reward.
